Levine: Trayce Thompson Day-To-Day After Elbow Injury

By Bruce Levine--

CHICAGO (CBS) -- The news was all good for the White Sox and rookie outfielder Trayce Thompson after he injured his left elbow Monday evening. An MRI confirmed no major injury or dislocation in Thompson's elbow.

The injury occurred when he dove to catch a line drive in the ninth inning. Thompson will miss at least two to three games.

"This morning it was pretty stiff, but since getting here and doing some things it has loosened up," Thompson said prior to Tuesday's game. "It is kind of a day-to-day thing. It is nothing serious. I am really lucky, the replay looked really bad when I did it. We will see how it feels after today. I am not doing anything today. Hopefully it feels better each day, so it comes along."

The 24-year-old Thompson is hitting .377 in 61 at-bats, with four home runs and 13 RBIs, since getting called up in August. The organization considers Thompson the best defensive outfielder in the system, including at the major league level. The chance of Thompson breaking into the outfield full time depends on what the team does with its present outfielders in the offseason.

"I have just come up in and have played my game," Thompson said. "I also blew a game (two-run error in the outfield). That was a big mistake. That will happen again in my career. I just play hard and it is what it is. I just want the trust of my teammates. I think that the fact I haven't tried to do too much up here has helped. This has been a lot of fun. The guys have made it very comfortable for me."

The White Sox have had difficulty producing outfielders. The last organizational outfielder who had an impact on the team was Aaron Rowand. He has been gone nine years, after first coming up to the major leagues in 2001.
