Neighbors On Edge After Three Killed, Two Wounded In Fuller Park Shooting

CHICAGO (CBS) --A mass shooting incident early this morning in Chicago's Fuller Park neighborhood left three dead and two more wounded, shocking, even in a neighborhood where violence has been an on-going problem.

3rd Ward Alderman Pat Dowell represents the Fuller Park Neighborhood. Ald. Dowell says police tell her the shooting rampage was definitely gang-related in an area where shootings and street violence have been all too common

CBS 2's Derrick Blakley reports a deserted playlot near 42nd and Princeton, where red crime scene tape, tied like a bow, is the only hint of the carnage last night.

Just after midnight, while a group was drinking and listening to music, a red van appeared in the alley and bullets began to fly.

The shooting claimed the lives of 28-year-old Tyrone Spikes, 22-year-old Ayanna Northern, a mother of a four-year-old, and Antian Hardmon. 25.

Aaron Flex, who lives across the street, says a bullet tore through his son's bedroom.

"If he was in his room, the bullet would have went right over his bed," Flex said. "If not, it possibly could have hit him."

It's been a long time since residents felt safe here. Now some, like Flex, are ready to move away.

"Where your kids can run out the front of the house, ride their skateboard, ride their bike," Flex said. "They can't do none of that. None of that."

Alderman Dowell is calling for more police resources in areas plagued by violence.
"I believe we need more dedicated police officers to deal with the gangs, guns and drugs in our community," Dowell said. "I would like to see reallocation of police from areas that are experiencing less violence to areas receiving more violence."

But the alderman also says police deserve more cooperation from the residents. As she put it, "The code of silence is killing the Black community."
