Professor Moves Exam To Accommodate Diehard Cubs Fan Going To Wild-Card Game

(CBS) Cubs fan and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign junior Ben Larson found himself in a dilemma recently.

He and his family scored tickets to Wednesday's NL wild-card game that will be played between the Cubs and Pirates in Pittsburgh. The problem? He had an exam scheduled for Thursday and wouldn't make it back in time because his family was driving to the game.

"So I sat on my bed, trying to figure out what to do," Larson told WBBM's Lisa Fielding. "I was trying to think how to word my email to my professor but then just decided to be totally honest with him. I told him I had tickets to the game and asked if he could move my midterm to another day."

So Larson emailed his professor to explain the situation. The honest approach worked out well, as his professor replied that he could take the exam Friday instead.

"If it were any other team, I would hesitate," his professor responded. "But, the universe gives Cubs fans only so many post-season games. They must be savored."

Larson expressed his joy on Twitter over the weekend.

The La Grange native says he was shocked by the response.

"I couldn't believe it that he was going to let me go," Larson said. "It was super cool of him. Super understanding just that he did this. I'm super excited."

Larson says he's already started studying. He figures the least he can do is get a good grade for the man who's pulling for him and his team.

"I'm going to take the exam on Friday instead. I think I owe him that. I'm definitely going to start studying. If he's going to let me go to the game, I should really study and get a good grade."
