Girl, 2, Seriously Injured By Riding Mower In Unincorporated Joliet

(CBS) -- Authorities say a two-year-old girl was seriously injured this afternoon in unincorporated Joliet - when her great grandmother backed over her in a riding lawnmower.

The great grandmother told the Will County Sheriff's office that when she noticed her two-year-old great granddaughter, she was playing near the garage.

But then - Deputy Chief Tom Budde says the 64-year-old great grandmother backed the riding lawnmower up and felt an impact and heard the screams.

"The child was partially pinned underneath the mowing deck. the great grandmother was unable to get the mower off the 2-year-old victim," Budde said. "The screams also woke up the victim's mother who was inside sleeping. She was unaware of the activity going on outside."

Deputy Chief Budde says a rescue crew was able to lift the mower off the toddler.

He says she suffered severe lacerations to the upper leg; her injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

The deputy chief says it appears to be a terrible accident. He says drugs and alcohol were not involved.
