Watch: Ernie Banks' Last Stand In 1986 Exhibition Game
(CBS) On Feb. 16, 1986, former players of Cubs and Mets who were a part of the famous -- or depending on your point of view, infamous -- 1969 season came together for an exhibition game in Phoenix to raise money for charity.
While the memories of the 1969 season in which Chicago blew a 9 1/2-game lead were too much for Cubs legend Ron Santo to handle to show up -- as the Tribune detailed well here -- Hall of Famer Ernie Banks was his usual dynamic self. It's believed by many to be the last time Banks got a hit in an organized game. Banks was 55 at the time, with 1971 being his last season in the big leagues.
"I still got it," Banks said after getting a hit.
Banks passed away in January. The Cubs honored him Monday during the seventh inning of Game 3 of the NLDS by having a video of Banks on the videoboard leading the Wrigley Field faithful in the singing of "Take Me Out to the Ball Game."
