Worker: Smash-And-Grab Thieves Targeting Cars Near U Of C Hospital

(CBS) -- Workers who park near the University of Chicago Medical Center say at least two dozen cars have been hit recently by smash-and-grab thieves.

WBBM's Steve Miller reports.

Glass shards on the pavement on Payne Drive near 57th Street says it all.

A construction worker tells WBBM the window-smashing has been going on since this summer and nobody's done anything. His car was burglarized over the summer, with about $2 in change taken.

"I had tools in the back. They didn't take it," says the worker, who has been on a job at the hospital.

His foreman went to the general contractor and reportedly was told, "'I'm not a parking attendant."

WBBM has asked the Chicago Police Department for comment.

A spokeswoman for the University of Chicago Medical Center says the hospitals offer free parking in a patrolled lot that construction workers can use.  It is more than a mile away, but U of C says there's a free shuttle.
