Police: 2 Dead, 14 Wounded In Weekend Shootings Across Chicago

(STMW) --Two people, including a 3-year-old boy, were killed and at least 14 others have been wounded in shootings across Chicago since Friday night, police said.

A father was arrested after his 6-year-old son found a loaded gun and accidentally shot his 3-year-old brother in the head Saturday night in their Humboldt Park neighborhood home on the West Side.

Michael Santiago, 25, has been charged with one felony count of child endangerment causing death, according to a statement from Chicago Police.

About 9:05 p.m. Saturday, Santiago stored the loaded gun on top of a refrigerator in their home in the 1000 block of North Francisco, police said.

The man's 6-year-old son found the gun and accidentally shot his brother, 3-year-old Eian H. Santiago, in the head, police said.

A family member carried Eian to Norwegian American Hospital. The boy was later transferred to Mount Sinai Hospital, where Eian was pronounced dead at 11:48 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Michael Santiago was scheduled for a bond hearing Sunday.

More than a dozen people gathered outside Sinai early Sunday, crying and hugging, as they waited to hear news of the boy's condition.

About 2:05 a.m. Sunday, one man was killed and another was wounded in a Roseland neighborhood shooting on the Far South Side, police said.

The men, ages 19 and 22, were in a vehicle pulling away from the curb in the 10500 block of South Prairie when another male walked up and opened fire, police said.

The vehicle sped away and eventually crashed into a tree in the 10500 block of South Prairie, police said.

The driver, the 22-year-old man, was shot in the upper back and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The Cook County medical examiner's office could not immediately confirm the fatality Sunday morning.

The 19-year-old man sitting in the passenger seat was shot in the left knee and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where his condition was stabilized, police said.

A police source said both men are documented gang members.

The weekend's most recent nonfatal shooting happened Saturday night in the Chatham neighborhood on the South Side.

Officers responding to a call of shots fired in the 7900 block of South Lafayette found a 37-year-old man unresponsive on a sidewalk with a gunshot wound to the head, police said. He was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition.

The 3-year-old's shooting was part of a 30-minute span of shootings that left four other people hurt.

About 9:15 p.m., a man was shot in the right calf in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood on the Northwest Side. The man, 36, was on the sidewalk in the 5500 block of West Altgeld about 9:15 p.m. when someone walked out from an alley nearby and opened fire, police said. The shooter then jumped into a vehicle, which sped away. The man was taken in good condition to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, police said.

About 9 p.m. on the South Side, a 22-year-old man was shot in the leg in Washington Park's 5300 block of South Michigan. The man was in a car stopped at an intersection when a dark colored car pulled up and someone inside fired shots. The man, a documented gang member, was taken to Stroger Hospital where his condition was stabilized, police said.

Fifteen minutes earlier, a 26-year-old man was shot in the leg after being robbed in the East Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side. Two people robbed the man at about 8:45 p.m. in the 100 block of South Homan, taking an unknown amount of cash and running away after the shooting. The man was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where his condition was stabilized, police said.

At 8:42 p.m., a 35-year-old man was shot in the head in the South Side Woodlawn neighborhood. The man was sitting in a car in the 6100 block of South Ellis when a light colored car drove by and someone inside the car shot at the man, police said. The man, a documented gang member, was taken to Stroger Hospital where his condition was stabilized, police said.

At least eight others have been wounded in separate shootings since 6 p.m. Friday.
