Girl Rescued From Kidnapping Attempt In Bronzeville

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A girl was rescued by a Good Samaritan after a man tried to kidnap her Thursday evening at a bus stop in the Bronzeville neighborhood.

Police said a man jumped out of a vehicle at the bus stop at 36th Street and King Drive around 6:30 p.m., grabbed the girl by the neck, and tried to shove her into his car.

A man who saw what was happening stepped in to help. Police credited that man with thwarting the kidnapping attempt.

The girl was not injured, but might be traumatized by what happened.

The would-be kidnapper fled after he was confronted by the Good Samaritan. The suspect sped away south on King Drive in a gray midsize sedan.

Police issued a community alert warning area residents to be on their guard, and not allow children to walk or play alone.

They also advised identifying safe havens along their children's route to school and home, such as local businesses or trusted neighbors, so kids have a place to go in case they are confronted.

Anyone with information that might help police find the suspect should call Area Central Detectives at 312-747-8380.
