Cubs' David Ross 'Probably' Will Retire After 2016 Season

(CBS) Cubs veteran catcher David Ross, 38, is "probably" going to retire after the 2016 season, he told MLB Network Radio on Sirius XM on Monday.

"This is probably going to be it for me, time to be a dad, I'm going to give it one more run," Ross told the station.

That plan comes as no surprise, as Ross has one season left on a two-year, $5-million deal he signed ahead of the 2015 season to primarily serve as left-hander Jon Lester's personal catcher and provide leadership to a young team. Ross hit .176 with one homer and nine RBIs and a .518 OPS in 72 games in 2015 as the Cubs won 97 games and advanced to the NLCS. He was constantly lauded by manager Joe Maddon for setting the tone in the clubhouse.

Cubs starting catcher Miguel Montero has two years left on his deal, and Chicago executives have made it clear they still want to develop Kyle Schwarber as a catcher after he spent most of his rookie season playing left field.
