Man Killed, Five injured In South Side Shootings

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A man was killed and five other people, including three teenagers, were wounded in shooting across Chicago's South Side Tuesday, authorities said.

A man was shot to death late Tuesday night in the Englewood neighborhood.

Noel Burrell, 39, was standing on the street in the 1200 block of West 73rd Place at 11:55 p.m. when he heard shots and felt pain, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Burrell, who lived in the 1300 block of West 73rd Place, was shot in the left shoulder and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead at 12:37 a.m., authorities said.

Several hours earlier, a 17-year-old boy was shot in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood.

The boy told investigators he was outside in the 8600 block of South Morgan at 8:25 p.m. when he heard shots and felt pain, according to police. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where his condition was stabilized.

A police source said the boy is a documented gang member and his gunshot wound might have been self-inflicted.

Earlier Tuesday afternoon, two men were shot in the South Shore neighborhood.

The men, ages 29 and 34, were standing in the 2100 block of East 68th Street about 3:10 p.m. when a dark-colored vehicle pulled up and someone inside fired at them, police said.

The 29-year-old was shot in the arm and the 34-year-old was shot in the leg, according to police. They were both taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where their conditions were stabilized.

Two teenagers were wounded in a drive-by shooting Tuesday morning in the West Pullman neighborhood on the Far South Side.

The 17-year-old boy and 13-year-old girl were standing with a group near an alley in the 11700 block of South Perry a few minutes after 9 a.m. when someone fired shots from a dark van driving by, police said.

The boy was shot in the buttocks and the girl was shot in the right leg, police said. They were both taken in good condition to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

Police said the shooting is believed to be gang-related.
