Five Injured In Fire At John Hancock Building

(CBS) -- Five people were injured in a fire in the John Hancock Building Saturday afternoon, Chicago fire officials said.

Flames could be seen coming out of the windows in the northeast corner of the 50th floor of the building at 175 East Delaware. The sight at the iconic high rise drew the attention of crowds below.

"I went, 'Holy Cow!'" pedestrian Diane Cosentino tells CBS 2's Audrina Bigos.

Five people were hospitalized, two in good condition and three in stable condition, mostly for smoke inhalation. The fire was in a residential unit, but did not leave the residence, fire officials said.

The fire, first reported around 2:30 p.m., appeared to be accidental. It occurred a few hours before a major Michigan Avenue holiday event, the Lights Festival and Parade.
