Gov. Rauner, Pastor Brooks Pass Out Turkeys On South Side

(CBS) -- Turkeys, potatoes, and fixings were handed out to the need on the South Side Sunday, reports WBBM's Mariam Sobh.

New Beginnings Church has been hosting the turkey drive for 15 years.

For the last two years, Governor Rauner has taken part. Pastor Corey Brooks and Governor Rauner stood and passed out frozen turkeys.

"Last year we served 2,500, so this year we're expecting more," Brooks said.

Rauner paused to take photos and Brooks shook hands and hugged community members.

Brooks has been under fire for some time, due to his strong support of Rauner for governor. He says New Beginnings Church has lost nearly half its members since then.

Hundreds of people turned out for the turkey drive and organizers say they were anticipating double the amount of last year.

They estimate at least 5,000 turkeys were handed out.
