Protesters Vandalize Christmas Tree In Millennium Park

(CBS) -- After marches in the Loop, River North and South Loop, protesters set their sights on the City of Chicago's official Christmas Tree in Millennium Park.

Several dozen protesters were seen taking down metal barricades and then stripping the lights off the tree before 10 p.m. Wednesday. It was yesterday that the city held the official tree lighting ceremony. CBS 2 observed two women being restrained by police.

The protesters then went north down Michigan Avenue and stripped Christmas decorations off of Trump Tower.

The protests come on the second night since city officials released dashcam footage of a Chicago Police officer fatally shooting 17-year-old Laquan McDonald.

Earlier Wednesday, dozens of protesters shut down several intersections in the Loop and River North. Later in the evening, protesters marched outside the Chicago Police First District Station in the South Loop, where at least one person was arrested.

In Bronzeville, protestors walked along 35th to Police Headquarters, calling out the names of Rahm Emanuel, Anita Alvarez and Garry McCarthy, calling for them to be removed.

Tainika Somerville brought her 8-year-old sons out to the march.

"I just want to see the unnecessary killing stop," she said.

At the top of the agenda, plans to protest on Michigan Avenue on Black Friday.

"We do not come to be violent, but we will shut this city down," said JR Fleming.

On Tuesday afternoon, city officials released police dashcam video showing 17-year-old Laquan McDonald fatally shot by a Chicago Police officer last year. That prompted hundreds of protesters blocking streets Tuesday evening. The officer involved in the shooting, Jason Van Dyke, was charged with first degree murder on Tuesday prior to the video being released.
