White Sox Sign Catcher Alex Avila

(CBS) The White Sox have signed catcher Alex Avila to a one-year deal, the team announced Wednesday.

Avila, 28, was inked to a $2.5 million deal with the White Sox. He previously played the past seven seasons with the Detroit Tigers.

"Alex gives us a veteran presence behind the plate who provides solid defense and a productive left-handed bat," White Sox general manager Rick Hahn said in a statement.

In his seven-year career, Avila has hit .242 with 66 home runs and 282 runs batted in, compiling a .345 on-base percentage. He's expected to platoon at catcher with Tyler Flowers. The White Sox recently lost catcher Geovany Soto to the Los Angeles Angels in free agency.

In 67 games during the 2015 season, Avila hit .191 with four home runs and 13 RBIs.
