Illinois Democrats Say Congress Should Reconsider Gun Restrictions To Fight Terrorism

(CBS) -- Some Illinois Democrats suggest Congress reconsider restrictions on gun sales as way to prevent terrorist attacks.

Speaking before President Obama's address to the nation, Senator Dick Durbin calls the president's speech "timely".

Rep Jan Schakowsky says following the mass shooting in San Bernardino, there's a growing frustration within Congress about lawmakers' lack of action on gun control.

Schakowsky and Durbin support recently rejected amendments to ban gun sales to felons, the mentally ill and those on the no-fly list.

In addition, Durbin says increased attention should be paid to the 70 million foreign travelers who come into the US each year, instead of the much smaller group of Syria refugees.

He says the vetting process for refugees is triple the length that what federal judges go through to be appointed to the bench.
