Reports: Cubs Re-Sign RHP Trevor Cahill
(CBS) The Cubs have re-signed free-agent right-hander Trevor Cahill, according to multiple reports. The deal is for one year and $4.25 million, according to ESPN's Buster Olney, who first reported the news.
After signing a minor league deal with Chicago last season, Cahill become a trusted arm for manager Joe Maddon late in the season. Cahill, 27, had a 2.12 ERA and 0.77 WHIP in 17 regular-season innings in 2015. He allowed one run in 2 2/3 postseason innings.
Cahill has a career 4.13 ERA. He began his career as a starter before transitioning into a reliever in recent years. He figures to be stretched out in spring training, though it's unlikely he makes a return to the rotation. Cahill will most likely be used as a long reliever and middle reliever.
