Some Theaters Telling Star Wars Fans To Leave Lightsabers At Home

(CBS) -- A long, time ago, in a galaxy far, far away…costumes were ok in the theater, but not now. The Force Awakens this week, with new, stricter rules.

CBS 2's Audrina Bigos has more on the costume crackdown.

As the force awakens so do the security concerns. Even though die-hard fans have been waiting 10 years for this movie, they might have to leave their costumes at home, depending on the theater.

Gabriel Calderon's Jedi name is Angelus Kalen.

"I'm my own Jedi," he said. "I actually walk the path of a Jedi"

The Jedi lifestyle comes with the Jedi garb.

"Wearing costumes kind of adds more ceremony, a little bit more ritual so it makes it a little more special," Calderon said.

For 38 years, Star Wars fanatics have lined up, dressed as storm troopers, rebel pilots, Jedi and Darth Vader.

This time around, there's fear of terrorist attack on the big opening night.

AMC's new Dine Theaters in Block 37 is enforcing costume rules, but all in the sake of security.

"Bring your light saber, just turn it off during the movie and leave your face paint and your Darth Vader mask at home," said AMC Corporate spokeswoman Erin Gregory.

Cinemark Theaters have the same rules. Theaters don't want anything resembling a weapon.

Regal Cinemas are banning all masks, props, face paints, hoods, and lightsabers.

IMAX, like the one on Navy Pier, are allowing masks but they have to come off inside the theater.

The movie is out Thursday. The plot remains a closely-guarded secret.
