Jason Heyward On Power Potential: 'There's More Left'

(CBS) One of the reasons new Cubs outfielder was so attractive to Chicago's brass is because he can affect a game in so many different ways. Regarded as having five-tool makeup, Heyward is praised for his quality range, strong arm, smart baserunning, ability to hit to all fields and his strength to deposit pitches into the outfield seats.

The one catch? He hasn't been all that powerful on a consistent basis. Heyward had 13 homers in 2015 after hitting 11 in 2014. Since a 27-homer campaign in 2012, Heyward has averaged a blast just once every 39.5 at-bats.

The Cubs believe in the 26-year-old Heyward's power potential blossoming in time after committing $184 million to him over eight years. Still, that wasn't a point they harped on during negotiations, Heyward said.

For his part, Heyward wants to make the most of his power potential, knowing he hasn't reached it yet.

"They're going into it saying they love the player, they love me as far as what I'm going to bring every day and all the intangibles as far as the baserunning, the outfield defense, the makeup, the will to want to do anything I can to help my team win," Heyward said Wednesday morning in an interview on the Spiegel and Goff Show. "For me, all those are great, but I think there's more left. I feel like also having a better hitter's ballpark in Wrigley Field for 81 will be conducive to the power numbers going up as well."
