Logan Square Bar Transforms Into Star Wars Cantina

CHICAGO (CBS) -- It's where Luke Skywalker and Obi Wan first met Han Solo and Chewbacca on Tatooine. The alien-filled Mos Eisley Cantina has become one of the most famous scenes from Star Wars: A New Hope.

Tonight, the music of Figrin D'an and the Modal Nodes will be performing for one night only at The Whistler, 2421 N Milwaukee Ave.

"We're presenting the place as Chalmun's Cantina, AKA The Mos Eisley Cantina, just for one night," said co-owner Billy Helmkamp.

Helmkamp says they came up with the idea back in January. He says the transformation has been quite the undertaking.

"We are dressing up the bar so to speak to make it more like the cantina, our staff will be dressed up like they are in the movie," he said.

To celebrate the release of "The Force Awakens," The Whistler is going to feature the alien house band, dry ice, and a special cocktail menu to fit the galactic theme.

"We're going to have fun drinks, some Star Wars staples like the Blue Milk and off the wall drinks," he said. "Think bright colors, dry ice and some fun ingredients, fun presentations."

Helmkamp grew up a Star Wars fun so it just made sense to get in on the hype.

"The phenomenon is what it is and the following is just a big part of pop culture, as we all know," he said.

The celebration begins at 6 p.m. and the band performs at 8:30 and 11. Capacity at The Whistler is only 74 so Helmkamp is expecting standing room only.

"The staff is taking bets how early people will start standing in line to get in when the doors open," he said.

Costumes are encouraged and droids ARE welcome.

"We are anticipating a lot of people to come dressed up. We've seen on social media, people posting their photos that they are preparing for it. It's going to be a real spectacle," he laughed.
