Parolee Charged With Elgin Bank Robbery

(STMW) -- A man who was on parole for aggravated battery has been charged with robbing a bank last month in northwest suburban Elgin.

Kwane Robinson, 36, was indicted by a grand jury Thursday on one count of bank robbery, according to federal court documents and the Illinois Department of Corrections. The criminal complaint filed earlier this month alleges that Robinson made off with $1,750 in the Nov. 16 robbery.

Robinson walked into the PNC Bank branch at 28 N. Grove Ave. in Elgin just after 10 a.m. and handed the teller a note that said, "This is a robbery, empty all your cash box," according to the complaint. The teller took money out of her top drawer and put it into a plastic PNC bag.

After comparing surveillance footage from the robbery to Robinson's mugshot, authorities included his photo in a lineup, according to the complaint. The teller then identified Robinson as the robber from the photographic lineup.

Robinson was also identified from surveillance footage by his parole agent, according to the complaint. Robinson was on parole from a 2013 aggravated battery conviction, for which he served more than one year in prison, according to IDOC. He has also served time for armed robbery and defacing the ID markings of a firearm.

The parole officer gave authorities Robinson's address. Surveillance footage from the residence showed Robinson leaving at 9:33 a.m. on Nov. 16 wearing the clothes from the robbery footage, which police officers found in a pile near the bank, according to the complaint. The footage showed Robinson returning at 10:24 a.m. wearing different clothing.
