2 Killed, 5 Wounded In Wednesday Shootings
CHICAGO (STMW) -- Two people were killed and another five — including rapper King Louie — were wounded in shootings across Chicago since Monday morning.
Both homicides occurred in the Austin neighborhood on the West Side within about a half mile of each other.
The most recent occurred about 6:15 p.m. in the 1000 block of North Lamon, police said. Nathan Smith, 39, of the 1000 block of North Lamon, fought with someone in his home when shots rang out, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner's office.
Smith was shot several times and was dead at the scene at 6:35 p.m., authorities said.
A police source said Smith was a documented gang member.
The other fatal shooting happened in the 1100 block of North Leclaire Avenue at 1:45 p.m., according to Chicago Police.
Christopher Ruffin, 33, of Richton Park was shot multiple times and taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead about 45 minutes later, according to police and the medical examiner's office.
A 55-year-old woman was shot in the finger and took herself to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park, where she was in good condition, police said.
The woman told investigators the shooter was walking eastbound on Leclaire when he walked up to the victim and shot him, then ran away northbound, police said. She told officers she witnessed the shooting, but was not with the man who was shot to death.
The most recent nonfatal shooting occurred in the Roseland neighborhood on the Far South Side.
A 25-year-old man was walking in the 10300 block of South Forest about 8:50 p.m. when another male walked up, announced a robbery and pulled out a handgun, police said. As the 25-year-old tried to disarm the robber, he was shot in the left hand.
He was taken to Roseland Community Hospital, where he was listed in good condition, police said.
A shooting several hours earlier left Chicago rapper King Louie injured on the Southwest Side.
The rapper — whose real name is Louis Johnson Jr. — was shot while in a vehicle in the 3900 block of West 83rd Street about 3:30 p.m., according to his management and Chicago Police.
Police said he was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where his condition had stabilized.
A representative from his management team said he was "awake and talking." Further details were not available.
King Louie, 27, coined the term "Chiraq" in 2009 and is also credited with the creation of "Drillinois," a term that plays off the hip-hop genre of "Drill" that he and other Chicago rappers, including Chief Keef, Lil Reese, Lil Durk and G Herbo helped popularize.
About 45 minutes earlier, a 19-year-old man was shot in a drive-by attack in the East Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side.
At 2:41 p.m., the man was standing on the sidewalk in the 100 block of South Homan when a vehicle drove by and a male suspect fired shots. The man was shot in the ankle and taken in good condition to Mount Sinai Hospital, police said.
The day's first shooting was reported in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood on the South Side.
A 42-year-old man was standing on the street in the 8600 block of South Morgan about 10:30 a.m. when shots were fired from a passing vehicle, according to preliminary information from Chicago Police.
He was shot once in the neck and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where his condition stabilized.
