Bulls' Doug McDermott Has Right Knee Strain, Is Day-To-Day

(CBS) Bulls second-year wing Doug McDermott has a right knee strain and is considered day-to-day, the team said Tuesday, a day after McDermott was a late scratch ahead of Chicago's 104-97 win against Toronto.

That marked the second game in 10 days that McDermott had missed time because of soreness in his right knee, which he underwent surgery on in December 2014 to remove a portion of his meniscus. McDermott also exit a Dec. 19 loss to the Knicks early because of knee soreness.

McDermott had an MRI done Tuesday morning, and the Bulls are still awaiting results on that.

Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg was hopeful that surgery wouldn't be needed again for McDermott.

"I don't think so -- it's not in the joint," Hoiberg said. "So from what I understand, no. Again, it's I guess it's just too early to tell."

McDermott is averaging 8.8 points while shooting 42 percent on 3-pointers this season, settling in nicely to a role on the second unit.

"Doug's been really good for us," Hoiberg said. "He's been consistent. He's been a guy that has really spread the floor for us and knocked down shots."

Veteran wing Mike Dunleavy continues to do rehab work and spot shooting in his recovery from late September back surgery, Hoiberg added. He hasn't started running yet, which is expected to come in two or three weeks.

It's still no certainty that Dunleavy will return this season, as he cautioned himself at media day on Sept. 28 just days after undergoing surgery.
