Crews Clear Ice-Caked Sidewalk Outside Ford City Mall

CHICAGO (CBS) -- We haven't gotten much snow this winter, but that doesn't mean all the sidewalks are clean and safe for walking.

A viewer tipped us off about a particularly icy stretch on the Southwest Side.

CBS 2's Suzanne Le Mignot reports the general manager of Ford City mall thanked CBS 2 for letting her know that the sidewalk in front of the property was not shoveled. After we called, crews came out Wednesday afternoon to clear the sidewalk.

Dawn Bornzin says her daily commute on the ice and snow caked sidewalks along South Cicero Avenue, had become more treacherous.

"It's very scary," Bornzin said. "I don't want to break my back. I wish they would do something about it."

Vincent Batson says the same thing.

"A lot of elderly people do come through here," Batson said. "I've actually seen an elderly lady come through here and I helped her with her things. If we had more snow, it's like they're not going to be able to walk through this."

The sidewalk Bornzin and Batson are using, is right in front of Ford City Mall, which is located in the 18th Ward.

"It's not safe," Bornzin. "I have a baby and I was gonna take him out in the stroller and would have been really hard."

Around 4:30 p.m., crews began clearing the sidewalk. The manager of Ford City says he wants customers and those who rely on using the sidewalk to be safe.

The city says they want anyone who sees an unshoveled sidewalk to call 311 and report it. The city says it is looking into the incident outside Ford City and if there is a fine, it could be as high as $500.
