Off-Duty Officer Victim Of Carjacking On South Side
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Two men, one armed with a handgun, carjacked an off-duty police officer's personal vehicle on Wednesday morning, police confirmed.
The "aggravated vehicular hijacking" occurred in the 8000 block of South Fairfield at 7:35 a.m., police said. 15 minutes earlier, a car was reported stolen a half a mile away.
The off-duty officer did fire at the two offenders, but did not strike them, police said.
"The owner was an off-duty Chicago policeman who observed the offender enter the car," said Chicago Police Deputy Chief Kevin Ryan. "The officer ran up to the car and announced his office at which time he noticed the offender had a weapon and it was an armed encounter at that point and there were shots fired by the off-duty officer."
The suspects fled the scene in the officer's car, which was struck by multiple bullets. The cars was dumped a short time later about a mile-and-a-half away.
"We are now processing those cars and the investigation is continuing," Ryan said.
No suspects are in custody.
The male officer was not injured. Officials say it does not appear anyone was hit by gunfire.
