Owner Of Building Where Firefighter Died Promises To Tear It Down

(CBS) -- The owner of the building where a Chicago firefighter plunged to his death before Christmas says he will voluntarily tear down his warehouse.

The building is boarded up now and city officials went to court to get it demolished because of numerous code violations, including an open hole in the floor where an elevator used to be, the shaft into which the firefighter fell.

A much bigger problem was revealed in housing court Wednesday. While investigating the building where the firefighter died, the city determined the building right next door to it, the one with the "license suspended" sign plastered on the door, is also unsafe and must come down.

Firefighter Daniel Capuano left behind a wife and three young children. The family is suing the building's owner, citing OSHA violations.
