Bitter Cold Temperatures Move Into Chicago Area

(CBS) -- Temperatures dropped overnight creating dangerous conditions across the city.

Sunday's high is only seven degrees, with an overnight low of minus three. Wind chills will make it feel like below zero temperatures.

The National Weather Service says a Wind Chill Advisory will go into effect at 9 p.m., with wind chills ranging between 15 and 25 below zero. The advisory will remain in effect until Monday at noon.

The cold will linger tomorrow, with a high of 10 and a low of two.

CBS 2's Jeremy Ross reports the temperatures are a powerful reminder of how deadly the weather can be.

In these kinds of conditions, bare skin is prone to frostbite and hypothermia is also a concern.

The medical examiner's office says last winter, 26 people died of cold exposure in Cook County.

With that in mind, the city operates shelters to help out. On the weekend, the Garfield Center at 10 South Kedzie Ave. is scheduled to be open 24 hours.

Monday is Martin Luther King Day, and some shelters may not be open because of that.

For information on warming shelters, call 311 or visit the city's website.

The tollway has launched its Zero Weather Road Patrols to help stranded motorists all day and night. Motorists in need of help can call 999 motorist assistance for help.
