Fox Lake Interim Police Chief, Deputy Sworn In

FOX LAKE, Ill. (CBS) -- The village of Fox Lake has filled the top two spots on its police department for just one year, hoping to clean things up after the staged suicide of officer Joe Gliniewicz.

CBS 2's Audrina Bigos reports one of the men sworn in Tuesday night led an investigation last year that pushed the old chief out.

In Fox Lake, two men took the oak swearing to serve a village rocked by scandal.

"This police department has had a lot of scrutiny and challenges," said new Interim Chief Russell Laine. "They'll be a lot more scrutiny, people watching to see what we do."

That, it has, taking over a department just months after the fallout of Fox Lake Lt. Joe Gliniewicz.

Village Administrator Anne Marrin who first raised questions about Lt. Gliniewicz says the new Interim Deputy Chief, Jimmy Lee Jr., knows the ins and outs of the police department.

"I think they trust him, they have worked with him. He knows the operation," she said.

Lee's agency was hired by the village last year to investigate police misconduct involving the former Fox Lake Police Chief Michael Behan.

Behan retired shortly after that investigation was launched.

Days after his departure, Lt. Gliniewicz was found fatally shot in a remote area in Fox Lake. Months later it was ruled a suicide.

Both Laine and Lee are signing one-year contracts with Fox Lake.

"At this point, we felt if we brought someone in here permanently, it may be problematic because we aren't there yet," Marrin said.

Both the new hires are coming from outside Lake County.
