Police Find Car Of Young Woman Found Dead In Lansing

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Police have found the car of an 18-year-old girl who was found dead on Sunday in south suburban Lansing, with a gunshot wound to her chest.

Summer Mitchell had been living in an apartment in the 17700 block of South Commercial Avenue with her boyfriend. Her family said her boyfriend's mother found Mitchell's body Sunday afternoon. Police said she had suffered a single gunshot wound to the chest.

An autopsy conducted Monday was inconclusive, pending further investigation.

Police found her gold Pontiac Grand Am late Monday on the South Side of Chicago, near 94th Street and King Drive, and had it towed back to Lansing.

Mitchell's family has said they suspect her boyfriend shot her after the two got into an argument about driving her car and staying out late, but Lansing village spokesman Fabian Newman said police have spoken to the boyfriend, and he is not a person of interest in the case.

Meantime, evidence collected at the apartment they shared has been sent to the Illinois State Police Crime Lab for analysis.

Mitchell left Kenwood Academy High School after her junior year to live with her boyfriend in Lansing. She decided to take online courses to finish her high school diploma, and kept in touch with classmates at Kenwood.
