Emanuel Welcomes Rauner's New Tone Of 'Mutual Respect'

CHICAGO (CBS) -- After months of heated rhetoric between them, Mayor Rahm Emanuel said he welcomes what sounds like a new tone of cooperation from Gov. Bruce Rauner, saying the last year hasn't been a successful one for the governor.

Rauner has had harsh words for Emanuel in recent weeks on everything from gun violence and school finances to jobs and taxes, but in his State of the State address this week, the Republican governor suggested a new attitude in talks with top Democrats: one of "mutual respect."

Emanuel said he was glad to hear the governor talk about a commitment to work together for the good of the state.

"First of all, I welcome a more congenial tone of cooperation, because the state has lost a year based on name-calling," he said. "We could see by the results, I don't think name-calling is the way to get people to cooperate and work together."

However, the mayor seemingly couldn't resist a bit of a jab at Rauner.

"Calling people from the Supreme Court to others names has led to the most unproductive first year of any governor in recent memory, and so I welcome the tone of openness. I welcome the tone of trying to hit the restart button, given the last year," he said.

Still, the mayor said the important thing is the follow-through on promises to work together.
