Chicago Man Guilty In 2014 Murder Of 14-Year-Old Girl Endia Martin

(CBS) -- A jury found a Chicago man guilty on Saturday in the murder a 14-year-old Chicago girl in 2014.

Donnell Flora was convicted on charges of first degree murder and attempted murder in the death of 14-year-old Endia Martin. Flora is the uncle of the girl accused of shooting Martin and Flora was charged with giving her the gun.

The jury deliberated for less than two hours before delivering the guilty verdict.

"Without him, our daughter Endia Martin, would still be alive," said Endia's stepfather Kent Kennedy.

On Friday, Flora testified that he gave the gun to his niece to give to another relative.

"Bad judgement isn't criminal, being stupid isn't criminal, making a negligent mistake is not criminal," said Flora's attorney Joel Brodsky. "Criminal means you intended to do a criminal act and I don't think he ever intended to do a criminal act."

Flora's attorney says he plans to appeal saying second-degree murder or child endangerment would've been more appropriate.

Martin was shot and killed during an argument with several girls in the Back of the Yards neighborhood. They had reportedly been involved in a feud and harassment on Facebook about a boy for a couple of months.

The teen accused of shooting Martin is awaiting trial in juvenile court.
