Police: 5 Dead, 16 Wounded In Chicago Weekend Shootings

(STMW) -- Five people were killed and at least 16 others have been wounded in shootings across Chicago this weekend, according to Chicago Police.

The latest homicide happened early Sunday in the Woodlawn neighborhood on the South Side.

A 30-year-old man broke into the woman's home in the 400 block of East 62nd Street about 5:15 a.m. and began to beat her, police said.

The woman, 28, was able to get ahold of a handgun, a struggle ensued and the man was shot to death, police said. The Cook County medical examiner's office said the man was pronounced dead at the scene, but additional details were not available.

The woman has a valid FOID card and it was not immediately known whether charges would be filed as Area Central detectives conduct an ongoing homicide investigation.

Late Saturday, a 34-year-old man was shot to death in the Humboldt Park neighborhood on the West Side.

The man was walking on a sidewalk about 10:45 p.m. in the 1100 block of North Springfield when two people walked up and one of them opened fire, hitting him multiple times before they ran off, police said.

He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he later died, police said.

Earlier Saturday, a 31-year-old man was shot to death in the West Garfield Park neighborhood, police said.

Officers responding to a call of shots fired about 3 a.m. in the first block of North Kilbourn found him dead at the scene with a gunshot wound to the right side, police said.

The medical examiner's office could not immediately confirm either of those fatalities.

About two hours earlier, a West Englewood neighborhood shooting left a man dead on the South Side.

Officers found 19-year-old Damon Allen Jr. lying on the ground in the 5900 block of South Bishop about 1:05 a.m., authorities said. He was shot in the head and chest.

Allen, who lived in the 1400 block of North Central, was taken to St. Bernard Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, authorities said.

The weekend's first shooting was also a homicide, occurring Friday evening in the West Side Austin neighborhood.

A 20-year-old man was standing outside in the 5100 block of West Division at 6:21 p.m. when someone walked up behind him and opened fire, according to police. The shooter then ran away.

The man was shot several times in the back and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he later died, police said. The medical examiner's office could not immediately confirm his death.

The most recent nonfatal shooting happened Sunday morning in another Austin attack.

A male victim was shot in the side about 5:30 a.m. in the 5100 block of West Madison and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, but additional details were not immediately available.

At least 15 more people have been wounded in other shootings across the city since 10:45 p.m. Friday.

Additionally, Chicago Police fatally shot a person they say broke into a West Englewood home early Sunday.
