Break-In Near Northwestern Campus Has Students On Alert

(CBS) -- A bold break-in and robbery near Northwestern University has students on alert and in some cases fearful

CBS 2's Jeremy Ross spent the day on campus and has more on the investigation.

Ross reports the crime took place in a fairly high profile area across the street from some of the university's administrative offices.

"Not generally an area where we have burglaries occur, especially when people are home," said Evanston Deputy Police Chief Jay Parrott.

Just outside of Northwestern's campus you'll find an apartment complex that someone wanted to get inside without an invitation.

"Heard her roommate screaming believing that there was an intruder in the apartment," Parrott said.

Evanston Police says officers were called there around 2 a.m. A wooden board covers up the place where a crime began.

"The subject broke the glass, reached in and unlocked the door," Parrott said.

Police say the intruder threatened at least one of the two female students inside saying he had a weapon. He left with two laptops, two wallets and a book bag as one of the victims called 9-1-1.

A campus security alert was issued and not long after police caught up to a person of interest. They're looking into if he left with the stolen items but also if he left clues at the apartment.

"We were able to recover some DNA and some articles of clothing that we believe might be related to the offender at the scene," Parrott said.

Police say it may take weeks before lab tests return including DNA results.

Police are reminding neighbors to consider strengthening their own security including better lighting outside of homes.
