Man Charged With String Of North Side Robberies

CHICAGO (STMW) -- A 29-year-old man has been charged with multiple robberies on the North Side.

Police said Andre Gonzalez beat people who would not hand over their belongings when he robbed them on the street.

Gonzalez, who lives just blocks from where the attacks took place, allegedly approached his victims on foot, demanded their wallets or purses, and assaulted them if they did not comply.

He was arrested this week after he was stopped for a minor traffic violation, and could not provide a driver's license or proof of insurance. Officers noticed possible stolen property in the vehicle, and were able to link Gonzalez to a string of six robberies in five days in the Belmont Central, Dunning, and Montclare neighborhoods:

• A robbery in the 6400 block of West Belmont Avenue on January 25 at 4:35 a.m.
• A robbery in the 3100 block of North Neenah Avenue on January 26 at 6:35 p.m.
• A robbery in the 2900 block of North Meade Avenue on January 27at 5 p.m.
• A robbery in the 3000 block of North Rutherford Avenue on January 28 at 6:50 p.m.
• A robbery in the 3900 block of North Oak Park Avenue on January 29 at 7:20 a.m.
• A robbery in the 3600 block of North Sayre Avenue on January 29 at 1:20 p.m.

Gonzalez has been charged with three counts of robbery, two counts of aggravated battery, one count of aggravated robbery with a firearm, and one count of aggravated battery of a victim 60 years of age or older.

Bond was set at $250,000 when he appeared in court on Thursday, according to the Cook County Sheriff's office. He was due back in court Tuesday.
