Man Shot On Eisenhower On Near West Side

(STMW) -- A 19-year-old man was shot early Sunday while riding in a vehicle on the Eisenhower Expressway on the Near West Side.

About 2:15 a.m., the man was a passenger in a vehicle with two other occupants heading westbound on I-290 near Racine Avenue when a dark colored vehicle pulled up next to them, according to Illinois State Police. Someone inside the vehicle fired several shots, striking the man once in the leg.

The driver took him to Rush University Medical Center, where his condition was stabilized, police said.

Tamika Loyd, who identified herself as the mother of the driver, told reporters outside the hospital that her son's car had been shot up, but that he and his friend were going to be okay.

"Thank God he is, but the violence needs to stop" Loyd said. "I don't know what else to say."

All lanes were open as of 5:05 a.m., police said.

While police were investigating, a vehicle drove through the closed-off portion of the expressway just before 5 a.m. and crashed into a parked trooper's car, police said. No one was injured, and the driver was taken into custody. Police believe the driver was under the influence of alcohol.
