White Sox Sign RHP Mat Latos To 1-Year Deal

(CBS) The White Sox have added some rotation depth.

Chicago has signed right-hander Mat Latos to a one-year, $3-million deal, the team announced Tuesday. There are no options or performance bonuses included in the deal, 670 The Score's Bruce Levine confirmed.

The 28-year-old Latos was 4-10 with a 4.95 ERA in time split between the Marlins and Dodgers in 2015. He has a career 3.51 ERA and 1.18 WHIP.

"Mat adds another quality veteran arm to our rotation and also increases our overall pitching depth, which always is essential to having a successful season," White Sox general manager Rick Hahn said in a statement. "While we believe in the futures of several of our young starters, the chance to add a pitcher of Mat's caliber was too good of an opportunity for us to pass up. He has proven over his career that when healthy, he takes the baseball and logs quality innings."

Latos' down 2015 season came after five straight solid seasons. In 2014, he was 5-5 with a 3.25 ERA and 1.15 WHIP. He was an 11th-round draft pick by the Padres in 2006.

Latos is expected to compete for a back-end rotation spot. John Danks, Jacob Turner and Erik Johnson will also be in that competition for the Nos. 4 and 5 slots. As it sits now, the White Sox appear to prefer to get right-hander Carson Fulmer, their 2015 first-round pick, seasoning in the minor leagues in 2016.

Latos is known to be a strong personality in the clubhouse. After being traded from the Reds to the Marlins before the 2015 season, Latos called the Cincinnati clubhouse a "circus" and accused the team or rushing him back from a knee injury.
