Teen Shot When Motorists Fire Guns At Each Other
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A 16-year-old bystander was shot on her way to school Thursday during a shootout and crash in West Humboldt Park.
The incident happened about 8:30 a.m. in the 1400 block of North Kildare, Chicago Police said.
A witness tells CBS 2's Suzanne Le Mignot a U Haul crashed into a row of parked cars after the driver fired off shots at another motorist.
"I guess he tried to get away by accelerating, he ended up hitting the cars," said the witness, who asked not to be identified.
During the shootout, police say, a 16-year-old girl walking in the area was shot in the leg. She had been walking to school.
CBS 2's Suzanne Le Mignot talked with the teen shooting victim Thursday night after she came home from the hospital.
Alex – she asked not to be identified by her last name -- says she's grateful she can still walk. The bullet remains in her leg. It was too close to her bone for the doctor to remove.
"I'm happy that I'm alive, because all the kids around my age that pop up on the news never come out alive," she says.
After the car involved in the shooting left, the witness says a person in the U Haul opened the back of the truck.
"He came out with a bag just walking around. He was like nervous, he was like confused. He didn't know what to do with the bag," the witness said.
