Authorities Hope Reward Will Help Solve Stray-Bullet Killing

(CBS) -- Friends and family of Aaren O'Connor hope a newly published flyer and its distribution this weekend will help lead them to her killer.

The 25-year-old was hit by a stray bullet while sitting in her car in front of her apartment in Pilsen last Friday night.

There's a feeling that someone in this neighborhood knows something, but may be afraid to speak up, CBS 2's Roseanne Tellez reports.

"We don't know why people won't tell the police things, maybe because they're afraid of retaliation, maybe because they were raised that way," says George McDade of Cook County Crime Stoppers.

The organization plans to hand out 2,000 flyers urging people who might not talk to police to tell them about the shooting death of O'Connor, a promising young woman who had moved to Chicago to be with her boyfriend. There's anonymity and a cash reward of up to $1,000.

"This one tears at the heart of everybody. This isn't a drug deal, this isn't a gangbanger," McDade says.

Police say the young woman was just sitting in her car when a bullet came through the window and hit her in the head last Friday evening. She died two days later; she was an organ donor and friends started a memorial fund in her name.

Chicago's Police Superintendent is optimistic the killer will be caught, he said this week.

At 11:30 a.m. Saturday, police detectives and O'Connor's co-workers and friends will pass out the flyers.
