Authorities Searching Lake Michigan After Woman Entered Water In NW Indiana

(CBS) -- The Coast Guard and fire department dive teams are searching for the body of a woman who either jumped or fell off a pier in Whiting Friday night.

The U.S. Coast Guard says they received a call for help around 9:18 p.m. Firefighters, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and the Coast Guard got to the scene and emergency responders began searching the water near Whihala Beach by both boat and helicopter.

Police say they began searching for a 20-year-old woman who entered the water but never resurfaced.

The National Weather Service reports the water temperature Friday was around 33 degrees.

The effort to find the woman spanned about six hours before being suspended at around 3 a.m. and resumed later Saturday morning.
