Two Friends Fulfilling Dream To Collect Wheelchairs, Scooters To Be Reused

(CBS) -- Two friends, one dying and one who survived a debilitating disease, had a dream to get medical devices like wheelchairs to those in need.

CBS 2's Brad Edwards first told us about them in an Original Report and now he has an update on the two and their mission.

The dream arrived in a box truck in the form of scooters and wheelchairs.

"Each one of these items is touching somebody's life," said Bob Shea of Devices 4 the Disabled.

It started when Bob Shea was struck with a rare neurological disease, Guillain Barre Syndrome. Back then, his neighbor friend was there for him.

Back then, his neighbor friend Ed was there for him. Ed is in the final throes of ALS. The pals came up with an idea thinking what will happens to Ed's wheelchair when Ed is gone?

Devices 4 the Disabled was founded. A church is one location where the material will be housed and doled out to serve a second generation.

"I am emotional," Shea said. "I spent a long time in a wheelchair. I was paralyzed and and I know what this is gonna mean to people…and I know back at his home, my friend Ed, who is paralyzed with ALS, this is all part of his dream."

They also received donations toward overhead after our first story, including a $35,000 check. If you would like to donate, visit supportd4d.org.
