Blizzard Can't Stop Organ Transplant At Lurie Children's Hospital

(CBS) – This is a story that brings together a sick orphan fromChina, a loving couple in Memphis and a team of medical experts in Chicago.

CBS 2's Roseanne reports on an transplant story that almost didn't happen.

The monkey wrench here is a good old Midwestern snowstorm. The question was: Would the family in need of the organ make it to Chicago in time?

Two-year-old Brooklyn seemed to have an angel on her shoulder. But when the call came there was one big obstacle.

"They were having a blizzard and would we be willing to try and get here? And I said absolutely," Jesse Faris says. "We just felt we don't care what we have to do -- we will do what it takes."

After ruling out commercial flights trains or driving, FedEx offered a very special overnight delivery.

"We got to the airport in 15 minutes, and there was a corporate jet waiting for us. It was fueled up and ready to go," Nicholas Faris says.

The little girl who likes stuffed animals was once given a 50 percent chance of living six months. Now, her chances are excellent.

The donated liver actually saved two lives this week. Young Brooklyn received part of it, and an even larger piece went to an adult at Northwestern.

If Brooklyn had not made it in time, there was a backup patient waiting as well.
