Private Jet Slips Off Runway At O'Hare, Airliner Slides On Taxiway

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A private plane slid off the end of a runway Tuesday afternoon at O'Hare International Airport, and minutes later an American Airlines jet slipped on a taxiway.

Just after noon an Embraer Phenom E55P jet operated by NetJets -- a company that operates private jets -- slid off the end of Runway 9L after landing at O'Hare, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. The plane originally was headed to Executive Airport in Wheeling, but landed at O'Hare instead, according to Chicago Aviation Department spokeswoman Karen Pride.

A NetJets spokesperson said weather might have been a factor. Freezing rain, sleet, snow, and freezing fog all have been reported throughout the day at O'Hare.

Two people were on the jet when it landed, but no one was injured. The runway remained closed as of 1:30 p.m.

Shortly after that incident, American Airlines Flight 1051, requested to be towed to the terminal after it slid on a taxiway at O'Hare, according to FAA spokeswoman Elizabeth Isham Cory. The flight was preparing for takeoff to Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey.

American Airlines spokeswoman Leslie Scott said the aircraft was being repositioned on the taxiway, and would return to the gate under its own power to be deiced and refueled. She said the aircraft did not leave the taxiway.

The FAA was investigating both incidents.
