Alshon Jeffery Signs Bears' Franchise Tag Tender

By Chris Emma--

(CBS) Consider this news from Tuesday a positive development -- Alshon Jeffery has signed the Bears' franchise tag tender, a showing of good will between the two sides.

Jeffery was tendered the tag last Monday, buying the Bears and their talented receiver until July 15 to work out a long-term deal. While Jeffery wasn't expected to hold out, his signing of the tag is a sign that the two sides can eventually work out an agreement. Jeffery will make $14.6 million in 2016 if he plays on the franchise tag.

The Bears and Jeffery's representative, Tory Dandy, were working diligently on negotiations during February's NFL Combine in Indianapolis, sources said. Just two days after their last discussions, the Bears announced that they would utilize the tag on Jeffery.

Jeffery recorded 54 catches for 807 yards and four touchdowns during the 2015 season, but he missed seven games due to four soft-tissue injuries. His injury limitations proved to be costly in a contract season.

"I don't think it's fair to take one segment of it and define him on that," Bears coach John Fox said.

"When he's healthy, we've liked his production."

The Bears have been open in their belief of Jeffery, with general manager Ryan Pace expressing his desire to work out a long-term deal with him.
