Woman Shot And Killed In West Town
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A young mother and aspiring nurse was fatally shot just blocks from the United Center early Wednesday.
Police said Daysha Wright was riding in a car in the 2100 block of West Maypole Avenue shortly after midnight when someone fired shots, and she was struck in the back.
She was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, where she was pronounced dead.
Wright was an aspiring nurse, and a graduate of Crane Medical Preparatory High School. Her best friend, Janina Carr, said Wright put her college studies on hold to take care of her 2-year-old son.
"Innocent. She never did anything. She always stayed in the house with her child," Carr said. "He stole my best friend, he stole a mother, he stole somebody that could have been someone one day. I don't understand. What is her son going to do now?"
Carr said it hurts that she'll never see Wright again.
Wright's family and friends said she was not the intended target. They believe the driver might have been targeted.
CBS 2's Jeremy Ross reports friends and family gathered at the scene of the shooting for a vigil Wednesday evening.
No one was in custody Wednesday afternoon.
Wright's shooting came just minutes after a Tuesday that saw 18 people shot across the city, including one fatality. Shootings tend to go up as the weather gets warmer, and Tuesday was the warmest day of the year so far.
