Firefighters Rescue Two People, Several Pets From Irving Park Fire

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Chicago firefighters rescued two people from a burning apartment building in the Irving Park neighborhood, and also saved the pets that were in the building.

The Fire Department said there was "heavy fire" when crews arrived at the four-unit building in the 3300 bock of West Berteau Avenue around 10:35 a.m.

Spokesman Larry Langford said firefighters rescued one person from the first floor, and then learned there was a bedridden woman upstairs.

"They went in and found her on the second floor. She was unable to get out of the bed. They rescued her. Some smoke had accumulated by then, and she did take in a pretty good dose of smoke, but she – we think – is going to be okay," Langford said.

Firefighters also saved several pets who were inside.

"And we had several animals that were rescued; at least five dogs and several cats. We administered oxygen to the pets, and they've all recovered well and have been turned over to their owners," Langford said.

The two human residents were taken to hospitals in stable condition. Two firefighters also suffered minor injuries -- one suffered a sore leg, the other a minor burn.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
