CPS Warning Parents About Possible Teacher Walkout April 1
CHICAGO (CBS) -- It's no April Fool's joke.
The Chicago Teacher's Union says its members might not show up for work on April 1.
CBS 2's Dorothy Tucker reports, Chicago Public School administrations are sending a letter to parents, warning them they may need to find someone to watch their children that day.
The letter, addressed to families and signed by CEO Forrest Claypool, states: "We know that CTU leadership has proposed an illegal one-day strike, asking teachers to leave their classrooms empty and take to the streets."
Claypool writes that the details are unknown but "we encourage you to speak with your childcare provider and employer to create any necessary contingency plans."
"Childcare is very expensive, employers don't care," said CPS parent Brandei Bell. "They want you at work every day, which is why I work from home, but most people don't have that luxury"
The Chicago Teachers Union, which is seeking a new contract with CPS, says the Day of Action could include shutting down the schools, pickets, a large rally after school or a massive walk into the schools.
If teachers decide not to show up, administrators say they will not be paid, and if they call in sick they must have a doctor's note or face disciplinary action.
