Javier Baez Placed On DL As Cubs Roster Rounds Into Form

(CBS) Cubs infielder/outfielder Javier Baez will start the season on the 15-day disabled list with a left thumb contusion, bringing some more clarity as Chicago finalizes its 25-man roster for Opening Day on Monday.

The move of Baez to the DL is retroactive, so he could be activated in time for the team's home opener on April 11.

Outfielder Matt Szczur, infielder Tommy La Stella and righty reliever Neil Ramirez have also made the Opening Day roster, manager Joe Maddon confirmed. The inclusion of Ramirez means the Cubs will open the season with 13 pitchers, leaving four position players on the bench -- Szczur, La Stella, Jorge Soler and David Ross. Chicago's decision to go with 13 pitchers meant sacrificing depth on the infield, where La Stella is the only backup regular.

In other news, the Cubs have re-signed outfielder Shane Victorino, infielder Munenori Kawasaki and left-hander Manny Parra to minor league deals after they didn't make the big league roster.

Here's a look at the Cubs' 25-man roster:
