One Year After Zion Cop Fatally Shoots Teen, Family Disagrees With Official Account

Zion Marks Grim Anniversary

(CBS) -- Activists gathered Monday in far north suburban Zion to commemorate the one-year anniversary of the shooting death of a 17-year-old boy by police.

Justus Howell's mother, LaToya Howell, and his father, Lamont Stephen, were joined by families of others from across the country who died in police shootings.

Police say Justus Howell was trying to steal a gun and that led to a chase and confrontation with police. Lake County prosecutors deemed the shooting justifiable and criminal charges were not filed.

The teen's family says he did not have a gun. They have filed a lawsuit over the shooting.
