Periods For Pence: Women Protest Indiana Abortion Law

CHICAGO (CBS) -- The phones in Indiana Gov. Mike Pence's office are ringing off the hook with calls from women providing updates on their menstrual cycle.

The campaign, with a Facebook page called Periods for Pence, was launched to protest a new law in Indiana, which bans abortions due to fetal abnormality or on the basis of race or gender. It also requires the remains of aborted or miscarried fetuses to be interred or cremated.

One protester also called the office of the bill's sponsor, Rep. Casey Cox, to report that her vagina had an "amazing weekend."

"I wanted to give a voice for women who really didn't feel like they were given any kind of input into a bill that would affect our life so much," the woman behind the page, who wanted to remain anonymous," told WRTV in Indianapolis.

On Wednesday, there were reports via social media that call volume was making it difficult to reach anybody at the governor's office. However, a spokeswoman for Pence, Kara Brooks, said the office had not disconnected their phones, which had been asserted on social media.

The campaign has also taken hold on Twitter, under the hashtag #periodsforpence

Brooks said the governor's office has received "a little over 100 calls" and she added the governor welcomes calls from his constituents who have questions or concerns.

The Periods For Pence Facebook page currently has nearly 25,000 likes, with hundreds of comments from women who have been calling with their menstrual updates.
