Suburban Greek Orthodox Church To Hold Special Blessing For Motorcycle Riders

(CBS) -- Many churches bless animals, but this Sunday, Assumption Greek Orthodox Church in southwest suburban Homer Glen will host a blessing for a different type of "hog."

The Greek Orthodox Bishop Demetrios will personally bless each of more than 100 bikers and their motorcycles during a special service 12 noon Sunday, at Assumption, 15625 S. Bell Rd., in Homer Glen.

"He goes out after church with his holy water, sprinkles some on each of the motorcycles and says a prayer on each one of them for them," said John Ackerman, a spokesman for the bishop. "He considers it one of the highlights of his year."

Ackerman is not aware of any similar service. It was the idea of Assumption's pastor, the Rev.
Sam Dimitriou, who is a biker, and the Greek-American Motorcycle Association (GAMA), although any biker is welcome.

"What better way to kick off the summer riding season than to have his Grace, Bishop Demetrios, bless all the riders along with their motorcycles," said Rev. Dimitriou.

"It's truly a spiritual feeling that gives you a sense of confidence riding your motorcycle," said GAMA President John Corasis.

A scholarship fundraiser ride will follow.
