2 Dead, 7 Wounded In Weekend Shootings Across Chicago

(STMW) -- Two people have been killed and at least seven other people wounded in shootings across the city since Friday evening.

A man died early Sunday after he was shot and dropped off at a Far South Side hospital, according to Chicago Police.

The 28-year-old man was dropped off at Roseland Hospital, 45 W. 111th St., with a gunshot wound to the left hip a few minutes before 5 a.m., police said. He was later pronounced dead.

Police are trying to determine where the shooting happened. Area South detectives are handling the homicide investigation.

The woman died Saturday afternoon, about a day after she was shot in the head in the West Elsdon neighborhood on the Southwest Side.

Lauren Membreno was in the front seat of a parked vehicle about 7 p.m. Friday in the 5500 block of South Karlov when another vehicle pulled up and someone inside opened fire, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Membreno — who wasn't the intended target — was shot in the head and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 5:37 p.m. Saturday, authorities said. She lived in the 5300 block of South Spaulding.

A police source said her boyfriend, who was sitting in the driver seat, was thought to have been the target.

The most recent shooting happened about 8 a.m. Sunday in the West Side Austin neighborhood. The 22-year-old man was standing on the sidewalk in the 0-100 block of North Leamington about 8 a.m. when a male got out of a black car and fired shots, police said. He suffered a graze wound to the left armpit and was taken in good condition to Loretto Hospital. The gunman got back in the car and took off after the shooting.

Earlier Sunday, an 18-year-old man was shot and seriously wounded in the Southwest Side Little Village neighborhood. About 1 a.m., he was walking on a sidewalk in the 2200 block of South Marshall when someone got out of a dark van and opened fire, hitting him in the back, police said. The 18-year-old was taken in serious condition to Mount Sinai Hospital.

Late Saturday, a 21-year-old man was shot in Washington Park on the South Side. He was walking in an alley in the 5600 block of South King Drive at 10:43 p.m. when someone in a red car nearby fired shots, police said. The man suffered gunshot wounds to the left arm and right foot and took himself to the University of Chicago Medical Center. He was later transferred to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition was stabilized. A police source said the man is a self-admitted gang member.

About 11:40 a.m. Saturday in the West Side Austin neighborhood, a 22-year-old man suffered a graze wound to his upper left arm in the 5900 block of West Division, police said. He refused medical treatment at the scene. Police could not provide further details about the circumstances of the shooting because the man was being uncooperative with investigators. A police source said the man is a documented gang member and the shooting might have been gang-related.

Nearly 10 hours earlier, a man was shot in the Kenwood neighborhood on the South Side. The 19-year-old was walking in the 4500 block of South Drexel about 2:12 a.m. Saturday when he heard shots and realized he'd been struck in the arm, police said. He was taken in good condition to the University of Chicago Medical Center.

Late Friday, a man was shot in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood on the Northwest Side. The 34-year-old was outside in the 2600 block of North Central about 11:40 p.m. when someone opened fire from a vehicle that then sped away, according to police. He was shot in the buttocks and taken to a hospital where his condition was stabilized.

In the weekend's first nonfatal shooting, a 29-year-old man was working on his vehicle about 8:30 p.m. in the 3300 block of West Beach in the West Side Humboldt Park neighborhood when someone got out of a black vehicle and fired shots, hitting him in the leg, police said. He took himself to Norwegian American Hospital and was then transferred to Stroger Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.
